Beyond the CV: Finding the Right Crew for the Right Yacht

Two sailboats with large white sails glide on a calm ocean under a cloudy blue sky, evoking a serene and tranquil mood.

Why do we use recruitment agents? There are multiple platforms which have made it easier than ever for yachts to access candidates directly. They don’t necessarily need recruiters just to receive a pile of CV's. Apart from the time it takes to go through hundreds of applications for a single role, there is another very important reason to use a recruiter: matching the right crew to the right yacht. This is where the human element comes into play.

Going through CV's primarily outlines experience and qualifications, but it’s difficult to convey personality through a CV. Yachting, more than almost any other industry, is about people. Crew must work together as a team for the yacht to operate at its highest possible level.

Yachting is an industry where you eat, sleep and work with your colleagues. During a busy season there is very little time for crew to catch a breather and reset socially. Fatigue and stress builds up, people become tense and irritable and small issues can quickly become bigger ones.

Crucial skills in yachting are emotional intelligence and self awareness. Crew need to maintain composure despite mounting pressure and fatigue. That means knowing yourself, knowing when to listen rather than talk and understanding how to properly recharge during your downtime. For some people that’s exercise, for others it’s a phone call with an old friend or simply watching a movie in bed. Prioritising your own needs when you finally get a break, rather than forcing yourself into another social situation, can be the difference between staying balanced or becoming completely burnt out by the end of the season.

Recruiters are professionals at analysing people. Beyond qualifications and sea time, a good recruiter learns to identify personality traits, work ethic, emotional intelligence and lifestyle fit which are factors that are often just as important as technical ability onboard. These things are far more difficult to convey through a CV.

A CV might say someone enjoys sport but a conversation reveals whether it’s truly part of their life. Hearing that a candidate spent their leave on a surf trip in Sri Lanka tells you far more about their personality and lifestyle than a single line under “interests” ever could.

Matching the right person to the right crew can make or break a yacht. In my experience, a significant amount of crew turnover comes down to mismatches in crew culture, personality or lifestyle rather than a lack of technical ability. High crew turnover can have a huge impact on a yacht’s performance. The more crew coming and going, the more time spent training new hires and the less boat-specific and guest-specific experience you retain onboard.

The strongest yachts are often the ones with stable crews who know each other well and operate as a cohesive team. A well run yacht means happy guests, and that’s the aim of the game.

In yachting, you’re not just hiring a CV, you’re shaping the environment people will live and work in every day. Technical skills can be taught and experience can be gained but attitude, emotional intelligence, adaptability and lifestyle fit are far harder to teach. That’s why the human side of recruitment still matters, and probably always will.
